Background For Medical Professionals

The Morris Center is designed to evaluate and treat children and adults with language-based learning difficulties, especially dyslexia. Clinical treatment results are robust and over the past ten years the Morris Center, established in 1986, has been a co-investigator on federal research grants from the National Institutes of Health. These 5-year studies provided robust scientific evidence of treatment efficacy of the language interventions for children with dyslexia. Short-term AND long-term gains were evident. These research studies confirmed that after intensive treatment, dramatic increases in language and learning skills occurred. The research also confirmed that the treatment gains were maintained in the majority of the children at BOTH ONE-YEAR and TWO-YEAR follow-up. "CLOSING THE GAP" IS A COMMON OUTCOME OF TREATMENT AT THE MORRIS CENTER (see graph below).

(research data from NICHD sponsored study conducted by Torgesen, J., Alexander, A., Wagner, R.,... and Conway, T.W. 2001 Journal of Learning Disabilities 2001; 34:33-58).

Also, The Morris Center’s clinical studies following clients over 10 –15 years revealed that most clients were able to maintain their level of academic performance through the balance of their education, up to and including college. Our goal is to strengthen weaker foundational skills, so that our clients continue to independently improve their own skills within their academic or occupational setting, long AFTER completing treatment at The Morris Center.
